Angela Hansen

Angela Hansen is a Lake Country-based artist and highschool art instructor. She completed her BDes at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design and her BEd from the University of Victoria. Angela creates primarily with encaustics and her work is recognized for its organic-inspired imagery, sculptural qualities and use of texture. She is inspired by forms found in the natural world, the human psyche, memory formation, and, more recently, a growing interest in ecological and environmental art practices as a factor in cultural transformations. Having grown up on a farm, she feels very drawn to nature and all the micro-processes happening around us - and is keen to eventually use her art as a form of environmental education.

Angela was awarded the IEA’s Emerging Artist Grant in 2019, was a feature artist in Peripheral ARTeries Biennial Edition, had two solo exhibitions in the Okanagan as well as an encaustic art installation, and her work was juried into the IEA’s exhibition “Survey of Encaustic Art” in California. Angela wrote an article for the fall 2020 edition of the publication Wax Fusions entitled “Creative Alchemy” and in 2021 she will have an encaustic exhibition at the Alternator Centre For Contemporary Art in Kelowna, BC, as well as have a piece in the exhibition “Wax Applications: Showcasing the Depth and Breadth of Encaustic & Cold Wax Mediums” at Texas A&M University Gallery.

Sculptural Encaustic

Not only is encaustic a lovely painting medium, it makes a brilliant and versatile sculpting medium. Angela's encaustic sculpting techniques are like a cross between papier m ache and ceramic work. Angela will demonstrate the creation of a wall sculpture using encaustic medium, hand-made paper, cotton and jute twine, on a wooden base. Not only is this method highly addictive and adaptable, it is made of entirely biodegradable and natural materials - Mother Earth friendly.
