This workshop will be centered on the fundamentals for making collages and three dimensional assemblages using beeswax and encaustic as the base then building in layers with images and objects.

Along with technical instruction that will cover using wax, images made from gelli prints, cold connection of objects and various mark-making techniques, we will discuss creating strong and clear content.

I like to teach workshops that emulate the way I work in my studio. There will be some time devoted to creating parts to be incorporated later into finished works. I think of this as pure play and experimentation which is totally appropriate for a workshop. There’s a freedom in making these little parts that later you will consider for inclusion in a collage or assemblage.

About Inspiration..

“It’s everywhere. It’s a wall, or a word. It’s in books. It’s the entire city of Rome. It’s remembering a morning row on the Huron River. It's an element. It's the name of an element. It's the atomic number of an element.
Inspiration is whatever I am obsessed with at any given time. A subject I return to again and again is science, especially as it relates to space.

I am a child of the 60’s and the absolute wonder and awe of space exploration has never left me.

I am also inspired by architecture and archaeology and these frequently drive the look of my paintings.

I love the look and mythology associated with broken down buildings, abandoned factories, forgotten places.”

About Graceann

I most often begin with a word, phrase or a scientific or mathematical concept in my head.

I have lists of these things on my studio wall or in sketchbooks.

I am constantly listening and reading, looking for the spark from my engagement with a word or two.  I imagine what this word, etc. “looks like” , what mood it evokes for me, and begin by laying down color onto a substrate to start the painting process.  Frequently the painting takes shape as I work it.

It is rare that I know exactly what a piece will look like before I begin therefore it’s a very active, conscious process that evolves over the time I am working.

From Our Host Lora

You are warmly invited to stay a while.

We invite you to imagine standing on the panoramic hillside of our studio, taking in the spectacular views of Clew bay and Croagh Patrick (Ireland’s holy mountain).

Open your heart to the profoundly moving drama of constantly shifting Atlantic skies, reflecting an ever changing light show on the bay. The wildness and drama of this spectacular area belie the peace and connection you will feel to Ireland and to this very special place.

Lay on a blanket in the heather and watch the stars emerge on a clear night or walk along the rocky shores, to gather shells, driftwood and memories. Find yourself letting go of the stress of everyday life, feel the mystery and beauty of this land, awakening your senses.

This unspoiled place provide a safe place of inspiration and experimentation to stretch your skills in whatever medium you are working on, in an amazing state of the art studio..
