Connie Ehindero
After a long career in advertising and commercial printing, Connie Ehindero began painting, launched with a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 2008. Originally a landscape painter, she found encaustics after a demo by Kathryn Bevier. The medium led her to her own language, both visually and through incorporating words in the work. Her WordFlow paintings were included in the International Encaustic Association juried exhibition “Vignettes in Wax and Words”. An avid reader, walker, beachgoer, hymn singer, and daydreamer, she re-forms others’ written words to create her own ambiguous phrases, eluding time and space. Her word sources range from poems of the Kabbalah to “Negro Poetry 1925 – 1945”, Overstory by Richard Powers to Bruce Springsteen.
Combining words or text into encaustic can create added levels of meaning and visual interest. This workshop will explore in depth the many ways of adding text. We will be incising, metal and wood stamping, adding collage, drawing, stenciling, and incorporating printed materials and rice paper.
Connie Ehindero earned her BFA in printmaking at St Lawrence University and London College of Printing, London England. She lives in Rochester, NY where she teaches workshops in encaustics at The Mill Art Center in Honeoye Falls, NY and abstract landscape painting through Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters. She is represented by Pittsford Fine Art Gallery in Pittsford, NY.

Waxing Poetic: Introducing Words into Encaustic
Combining words or text into encaustic creates added levels of meaning and visual interest. This workshop will explore in depth the many technical ways of adding text. We will be incising, metal and wood stamping, adding collage, drawing, stenciling, and incorporating printed materials and rice paper. I bring a printmaker sensibility to adding words. We will talk about the various meanings that merged text and images can convey with a few suggested exercises and studio practices that will help you find your own language.
