Gabriela Sánchez Apodaca (Mexico City, 1972) holds a degree in Textile Design and a master's degree in Visual Communication. Throughout the years, she has incorporated her academic background into her work as a visual artist, an activity to which she currently devotes her full time. 

Since she graduated with a Master's Degree in Visual Communication, Sánchez Apodaca has been consolidating a career combining the personal search for poetics based on the technical proficiency of materials and a set of exhibitions, both individual and collective. In this area, exhibits in cities such as Madrid (Spain), Leipzig (Germany), Chicago (USA), La Habana (Cuba), Oaxaca (Mexico), San Miguel de Allende (Mexico), and various spaces and museums in Mexico City and Cuernavaca. Gabriela Sánchez shows a clear consolidation of her own statement, which is evermore sound in its aesthetic enunciation. 

His teacher Huascar Taborga, introduced her to the comprehension and incorporation of fundamental elements of oriental aesthetics. Particularly the notion of gestures and movement, with which the artist broadens her production codes and turns facts into ultimate parts of her creative process. In 2017 Gabriela consolidates her Zen practices with her teacher Ryuki Kuwana, at a Calligraphy Performance private workshop in Tokyo.

Between 2002 and 2021, Gabriela Sánchez incorporates countless artistic works in which some common elements have a substantial impact. Among these, its exploration of the line as a way of representation undoubtedly stands out. 

Today, Gabriela Sánchez combines time dedicated to producing its artwork and teaching workshops in different techniques.

Zen Painting for Encaustics

I invite you to join me in an in-depth exploration of Mixed media with an Oriental Aesthetic for Encaustics.

In this class, you will learn different approaches to create beautiful Zen Paintings. 

We will review the Sumi-e principles and a Japanese Calligraphy Performance method so you can make bold and beautiful statement marks. 

After a complete Zen practice,  I will show you how to incorporate your work into your Encaustic painting.

You will experiment with various surfaces and different materials, including watercolor paper, rice paper, cradled panels, Indian ink, watercolors, graphite, pigment sticks, pan pastels, mark-making tools, and more.

This class’s complexity level is intermediate, but there is no need to have previous experience in these techniques.

  • 5- 9 Ampersand Encaustic boards 6 x 6”
