I create imagined landscapes with lush botanical forms and vibrant colors reminiscent of places I've loved, like my childhood home in Hawaii and my current home in the US Pacific Northwest. It has always been a priority for me to live close to inspiring natural areas because of the impact it has on my work and my state of mind. Being surrounded by such beauty has always had a strong influence on the colors and forms that I incorporate into my paintings. I feel the pull to paint my impressions of these places even when they are just a warm memory on a cold day. 

Taking time to study the natural world relaxes me and balances my emotions in stressful times. I want my paintings to be reminders that we are not separate from nature and that our future is rooted in helping her thrive.

Taming Water

In this workshop I'll share my secrets for how to capture the spirit of one of my favorite things to paint: WATER!

If you've ever tried to paint water, you know the challenges of creating a feeling of something beneath the surface. This is true whether you are painting a tropical ocean, a frigid lake, or a running stream. The techniques are essentially the same for all of them, but color, paint transparency, and a few other key techniques make all the difference. Watch as I take you through my process, step-by-step.

I'll demonstrate how I choose collage materials, introduce my favorite colors of encaustic paint, how to work with layers of encaustic medium, and when to add pigment sticks or pastels. Let’s dive in! (Sorry, I just had to...)

Adventure Awaits: The Portable Painter

I often sketch and make little paintings when I’m traveling, when my style is more relaxed because I have limited time or resources. It’s a fun way to capture memories from a trip, meet new friends, and get a good start on new paintings when you get home.

Lots of folks work in watercolor while on the road and that’s a great choice, but there are lots of options available. I’ll show you some of my favorites, in several different media. With a little planning you can even set up an encaustic travel kit! This video will show you some of my favorite tools and supplies to use while traveling and painting. In many cases, you CAN take it with you.
