Dietlind Vander Schaaf
Dietlind Vander Schaaf holds an MFA from the University of San Francisco and an MA from the University of Southern Maine. Her work has been described as “the transformation of disparate objects into elegantly simple compositions of pattern and grace” (Artscope). Vander Schaaf has exhibited at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Conrad Wilde Gallery, The Fuller Craft Museum, and On Center Gallery, among others, and been featured in Maine Home + Design, Decor Maine, UPPERCASE, and Downeast magazines.
Vander Schaaf is a Core Instructor for R&F Handmade Paints, an Ampersand Ambassador, and the former president of New England Wax. An annual presenter at the International Encaustic Conference, she has taught workshops throughout the country, including Haystack, Arrowmont, Castle Hill, Snow Farm, Penland, Maine College of Art, R&F, and internationally at Zijdelings in The Netherlands. The recipient of grants from the Maine Arts Commission and International Encaustic Artists, as well as a Tending Space Artist Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation, she is represented by Portland Art Gallery. Vander Schaaf is also a certified Kripalu yoga instructor with specialty training in meditation, advanced asana, Ayurveda, vinyasa, and pranayama.

Scaling Up: Working Large
My workshop highlights important tips and tools to help artists looking to grow their practice. In it I share what I learned as I began to move from smaller work to large scale painting. Topics include scaling up your ideas, tools, and materials and developing practices to support yourself as you grow as an artist. I cover gessoing a large panel and the application of brushstrokes to create a smoother, more even surface. I show off my big brushes and let you see how I work with them to build a painting. I talk about the range of ways to approach fusing so that you can create both a level surface and preserve texture in your work. I also touch on the elements of composition, color, and color mixing - key components to understanding what makes a good painting. Finally, I demonstrate how I finish my own work with Pigment Stick and Blending Medium. Of course, there are as many different ways to work large as there are artists painting with encaustic. I put together the workshop I wish I could have taken when I started to work large.
